Insurgent by Veronica Roth Update #1

Insurgent - Veronica Roth

I currently stand at exactly 217 pages in, after starting last night.

The book's plot is at the frustration stage: Tris and Tobias' relationship seems to be going all down hill because they are keeping the truth from one another and the Erudite have huge plans that may involve an endless simulation.

A few interesting points that I have noticed so far in my reading endeavours:

  • The gate that allows the amity into the outside world is locked from the outside, not the inside. This suggests to me the potential of a complete isolated outside world with more of a population OR that everyone within the city and their way of life is a huge out simulation of some sort. There is something not quite right about people not being allowed past that gate.

  • The second thing that I wanted to point out is that Tris' father, was in fact a Erudite turn to Abnegation transfer originally. It is funny that Tris went to Dauntless, her mother's old faction, and Caleb went to Erudite, her father's old faction. The fact that Tris is also Divergent like her mother, may suggest a hereditary instinct to choose your parents faction.

  • Tobias' mother definitely has an ulterior plan, that has something to do with the Abnegation plans.

  • And what is Marcus hiding? What information does he have?

Hopefully this will all be revealed, AFTER I finish that blasted essay.

Divergent by Veronica Roth - Complete

Divergent - Veronica Roth

So this morning I finished reading the first book, Divergent, in Veronica Roth's trilogy.

Needless to say I absolutely loved it and could not put it down despite the fact that I have a 2000 word essay on Italian Jews in the Holocaust due.

I wanted to point out a couple of different things the book told me that the movie failed to do or in some instances achieved better. So brace yourselves for some spoilers!

  • Firstly, there was the Visiting Day in the book, that it did not have in the movie.

  • The episode of Edward being stabbed in the eye by Peter and Drew

  • As I predicted in my previous post, the book shed some light on Natalie Prior's heritage (Tris' Mum). Revealing that she was in fact from Dauntless and also a Divergent, but because her mother was a Dauntless leader she told her to get out and choose the Abnegation faction - where it is impossible to fail the test.

  • Something else that completely differed in the movie from that in the book was the notion of the simulations and fears. Tris' fears are different from that in the movie and so is the idea of simulation. For instance her fear of being attacked by a bunch of crows was symbolic of her fear of not being in control of a situation. It was interesting to note that she only had 7 fears. As well as this, there was no addition to Four's fears like I thought there might in the book, especially his fear of hurting Tris.

  • I am going to make the bold statement and say that the "kiss" scene in the movie topped the books gradual introduction of that scene. Only because the movie combines Tris' being attacked by Al, Peter and Drew with her being protected by Four. This was well done, and a big credit goes to Veronica Roth for this and it's input in the movie.

I am not done with this little post yet, and I will continue to add more as I remember it. For now it is off to write an essay on the Holocaust.

So, I recently seen 'Divergent' at the cinemas. Now, I have not read any of the books but after seeing the movie, they are on the top of my "to read books".

I just wanted to make note of a couple of points, because I have never not seen a movie and then read the books, it is always the book first, then criticise the movie profusely.

So I will dot point what I believe the book addresses in depth that the movie did not. This is complete guesswork and I want to look back on this and see what I did pick up on, even though I have not read the book.

  • Tris' reflection and the symbolism behind it
  • Four's family background - what in fact happened to his mother and his father
  • The transition and change of Four's fears regarding Tris
  • Tris' mother's past and background regarding Divergents and the Dauntless faction
  • Tris' mentality, temperament and drive from a first person perspective
  • The end of the book in comparison with that of the movie
